Converting between Simplified Chinese (used in Mainland China and Singapore) and Traditional Chinese (used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau) involves much more than a simple character-by-character lookup. While standard character conversion replaces glyphs directly, regional Mandarin varieties also differ significantly in everyday and technical vocabulary. For instance, Mainland Chinese uses terms like 软件 (software), 信息 (information), 视频 (video), and 默认 (default), whereas Taiwan Traditional Chinese uses 軟體, 資訊, 影片, and 預設.
This tool is powered by OpenCC (Open Chinese Convert), the industry-standard open-source conversion engine for Chinese script and regional lexicon adaptation. By using phrase-level segmentation and curated regional dictionaries, OpenCC supports both pure glyph conversion (s2t / t2s) and full Taiwan phrase localization (s2twp / tw2sp). When you select "Simplified → Traditional (Taiwan Phrases)", the engine converts simplified characters to Taiwan Ministry of Education standard glyphs while seamlessly translating Mainland idioms into natural Taiwan expressions.
One of the biggest linguistic challenges in Chinese conversion is "one-to-many" character mapping (一對多字). During script simplification in the 20th century, multiple distinct Traditional characters were merged into single Simplified forms—for example, 发 can map to 發 (send/develop) or 髮 (hair), and 后 can map to 後 (after/behind) or 后 (queen/empress). Although OpenCC resolves the vast majority of ambiguities through context-aware phrase matching, human proofreading is still recommended for proper nouns, classical poetry, and specialized terminology.
Privacy and Security First: Because the OpenCC dictionary bundle is approximately 1.1 MB, this tool lazy-loads the engine on your first conversion and caches it in memory. Every conversion happens 100% locally inside your web browser. Your confidential documents, localization strings, and personal text never leave your device or touch an external server.
