Once a thesis, report, tender or meeting pack runs past a few pages, it is hard to say “see page 12” in a discussion without numbers, and impossible to reorder a dropped printout. Many PDFs are merged from several files or scanned, so they never had page numbers. This tool adds numbers to every page of a PDF in one go, without going back to Word to re-export.
There are four formats: plain numbers (1, 2, 3), “Page X”, “Page X of Y”, which also shows the total and suits documents where completeness matters, and the classic centered “- X -”. Position can be bottom center, bottom right, bottom left or the matching three spots at the top. Bottom center is the most common for books and reports; for double-sided bound documents, consider the outer corners.
With “Skip first page” ticked, the cover gets no number but counting still follows the physical page order, so the second page shows 2. That matches the common book convention of counting the cover without printing a number on it. Numbers are written in Helvetica, a standard PDF font, which keeps files small and compatible.
Page numbers are written directly into the page content, leaving existing text, images and layout untouched, and the original file is not modified. For PDFs with an open password, the tool asks for the password first. Everything is processed in your browser and documents are never uploaded to a server.
Yes. Tick “Skip first page”. Numbering still follows the physical order, so page two shows 2.
