Besides its pages, every PDF carries a block of document information: title, author, creator application, producer, and creation and modification dates. These fields are usually filled in automatically by Word, InDesign, scanners or export tools. The author is often your computer user name or company account, and the modification date reveals when the file was last touched. A few seconds of checking before sending a contract, résumé or report keeps internal account names, draft titles and stale details from going out with it.
This tool reads the PDF in your browser and lists the title, author, Producer, Creator, page count, whether it is encrypted, and the creation and modification dates. Creator is usually the application the document was edited in, while Producer is the program that finally turned it into a PDF, for example “Microsoft Word” with “macOS Quartz PDFContext”. A mismatch between the two is normal. Dates are shown in a readable format; an empty field means the original file never wrote it.
Permissions and version are read from the file itself. The permission fields (print, copy, modify, annotate, forms) are evaluated one by one from the /P permission flags in the encryption dictionary, so a file with only a permissions password and no open password still shows exactly which actions are restricted; when printing is allowed but high-quality printing is not, it shows “Low-res only”. The version comes from the %PDF-x.y header; if the document catalog declares a newer /Version, that value is used and the header version is noted. If a file is encrypted but its flags cannot be read, or the header is damaged, the field shows “Unknown” rather than a guess. Keep in mind that these permissions are honored only by compliant readers and are not real protection, and that the tool reads only the Info dictionary, not XMP metadata or hidden content inside pages.
This is a read-only tool: it never changes your file, and all parsing happens in the browser without uploading. To strip author and similar details, use our file metadata remover. To restrict opening and printing, use our PDF security tool.
