How metric, imperial and Taiwanese length units convert

The metric system uses the meter as its base unit, and centimeters and kilometers are simple powers of ten. Imperial units are built on the inch, which is defined as exactly 2.54 cm. From there, 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 cm, 1 yard = 3 feet = 91.44 cm, and 1 mile = 1,609.344 m. To convert between any two units, you first express the value in meters and then divide by the size of the target unit. That is exactly how this converter works, instantly and for every field at once.

The converter also includes the Taiwanese chi (台尺), which is still common in Taiwan for carpentry, custom cabinets, curtains, mattresses and fabric. One Taiwanese chi is 10/33 of a meter, about 30.303 cm, and it is divided into 10 cun (寸) of roughly 3.03 cm each. So a measurement quoted as "2 chi 2 cun" means 2.2 chi, or about 66.67 cm, and a standard "5-chi" double bed is about 151.5 cm wide.

Be careful not to confuse the Taiwanese chi with the foot. Both are casually called "chi" (尺) in Chinese, but a foot is 30.48 cm, about 0.18 cm longer. Over ten units the difference grows to almost 1.8 cm, which matters for furniture or built-in fittings. The mainland Chinese shi chi is different again at one third of a meter (about 33.33 cm). When ordering something made to measure, confirm which unit is meant or simply agree on centimeters.

Type a value into any field and the other units update immediately, rounded to six decimal places. Use the copy buttons to paste results into a quote or message. All calculations happen in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How many centimeters are in an inch?

An inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, so 1 cm is about 0.3937 inches.

How do I convert feet and inches to centimeters?
