What photo EXIF data reveals and how to remove it safely

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata that cameras and phones write into every photo. It typically includes the device model, lens, date and time taken, aperture, shutter speed and ISO, and, when location services are on, GPS latitude and longitude, sometimes with direction and altitude. That is handy for editing, but when you post an original photo to a forum, a marketplace listing or a blog, or send it by email, anyone who downloads it can read those details, and the GPS coordinates can pinpoint your front door.

After you add a photo, the tool lists the camera, exposure and GPS data it found and offers a "View on Map" link so you can see whether your location is exposed. When you strip it, the tool redraws the image pixels on a browser canvas and exports a new file. Because the new file contains only pixel data, EXIF, GPS and camera serial numbers are left behind. You can keep the original format or save as JPEG, PNG or WebP.

There is a trade-off to know about. Redrawn JPEG and WebP files are re-compressed at about 95% quality, which is visually indistinguishable for most photos but not a bit-for-bit copy, while PNG is lossless but usually larger. Modern browsers apply the EXIF orientation before drawing, so the cleaned photo stays upright. If you want to keep the original pixels untouched and only cut the metadata segments, use our File Metadata Purger instead.

Big social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram usually strip GPS on upload, but cloud-drive links, email attachments, many forums and "send as file" options in messaging apps keep the full EXIF. All processing happens on your device and the photo is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What information does photo EXIF contain?

Commonly the camera or phone model, lens, date and time, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length and, if location was on, GPS coordinates and altitude.

Does removing EXIF reduce image quality?

JPEG and WebP are re-compressed at about 95% quality, which is visually almost identical. PNG output is lossless but produces larger files.

Do messaging apps keep GPS data in photos?

Large social networks usually strip it, but sending a photo as a file, as an original or as an email attachment generally keeps full EXIF, so clean it first.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Reading and redrawing both happen in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device.
