How cURL-to-code conversion works and what to watch for

cURL is the lingua franca of API testing: API docs, Postman and browser DevTools can all export requests as cURL commands. In Chrome or Edge, open DevTools, go to the Network tab, right-click any request and choose Copy → Copy as cURL (bash) to capture the exact request. Paste it here to turn it into JavaScript Fetch, Axios, Python requests or Go net/http code. On Windows there is also a "Copy as cURL (cmd)" option that escapes with ^; pick the bash version instead to avoid parsing problems.

The converter reads the request URL, the HTTP method from -X or --request, every -H/--header header, and the body from -d, --data or --data-raw. Just like cURL itself, a request with -d and no explicit method is treated as POST. If the headers include Content-Type: application/json, the generated code keeps it so the server parses the JSON body correctly.

Flags that are not supported yet, such as -F for file uploads, -u for basic auth, -b for cookies or -k to skip certificate checks, are ignored, so add them by hand after converting. Basic auth becomes an Authorization: Basic header with base64-encoded "user:password"; file uploads use FormData in Fetch and the files argument in Python requests. Backslash line continuations in multi-line commands are merged automatically, so you do not need to tidy them up first.

A security reminder: a cURL command copied from the browser often contains cookies, bearer tokens or API keys, which are effectively your login. Parsing happens entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to a server, but strip or replace those secrets before pasting the result into GitHub, a chat channel or a ticket, and never hard-code keys in front-end code.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy a request as cURL from my browser?

Open DevTools, select the Network tab, right-click the request and choose Copy → Copy as cURL (bash). On Windows, prefer the bash version over the cmd one.

Why did the method change to POST?

cURL sends POST by default when -d/--data is present and no -X is given. The converter follows the same rule so the code matches the original command.

Are -F file uploads or -u credentials supported?

Not yet; those flags are skipped. Use FormData in JavaScript or the files argument in Python for uploads, and an Authorization: Basic header for credentials.

Is it safe to paste my cURL command here?

Parsing runs only in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Commands often include cookies or tokens, though, so remove them before sharing the output.
