Chinese Lunar Calendar Conversion, Leap Months & Zodiac Rules

The Chinese calendar (Nónglì) is a lunisolar system where each month begins on the new moon and lasts 29 days (short month) or 30 days (long month). An intercalary leap month is inserted about seven times every 19 years to stay aligned with the seasons.

Sexagenary cycle years (Ganzhi) and Chinese zodiac animals follow the lunar year, so dates in January or early February before Lunar New Year belong to the previous year. This tool uses built-in ICU calendar data covering Gregorian 1901-01-01 to 2100-12-31; dates outside are not provided.

Frequently asked questions

What date range is supported?

This converter uses built-in ICU calendar data and covers Gregorian dates from 1901-01-01 to 2100-12-31. Results outside this range are not provided.

Why does a January date show the previous year’s zodiac animal?

The Chinese zodiac and Ganzhi year change on Lunar New Year, which falls between late January and mid-February. Any date before Lunar New Year still belongs to the preceding lunar year.

Why is the Leap Month option or Day 30 disabled for some dates?

Only certain lunar years contain a leap month, and short lunar months have only 29 days. The selector enables these options only when they exist in the chosen lunar year and month.

How are lunar birthdays celebrated when they fall in a leap month or on day 30?

In non-leap years, leap-month birthdays are usually celebrated on the same day of the regular month. When a 30th-day birthday falls in a 29-day month, it is typically observed on the 29th.
